Marissa recently earned the title of Volleyball Player of the Week for her exceptional performance in our thrilling upset against John Jay High School. She will now compete against two other outstanding athletes from different districts for this prestigious award.

Congratulations to the Southside FFA Plant ID team for their outstanding achievement, securing 1st Place at the Hill District Fall CDEs in Harper, TX! Special recognition goes to Larissa Esparza for earning 1st High Point Individual, Melany Avila for finishing as 2nd High Point Individual, and Celine Sandoval for achieving 5th High Point Overall!
Empowering Students at the Youth Voter Fest
Southside High School social studies students participated in the Youth Voter Fest at Trinity University on Friday, September 27th This event, hosted by “Youth Do Vote” and Heather Eichling, offered students valuable opportunities to engage with local governance. During the festival, students met with city council members and representatives from various non-partisan organizations, and they interacted with a mock voting system. They also had the chance to register to vote if eligible and learned about the importance of civic engagement in their community. Notable attendees included Judge Peter Sakai, San Antonio City Council members, and State Senator Jose Menendez, who engaged in insightful discussions about pressing community issues with our students. This event is part of the ongoing extended learning opportunities provided by the SHS Social Studies department, designed to foster direct interactions between students and the institutions and individuals shaping our community.
Celebrating Choir Success at Southside High School
Congratulations to Senior Choir member Jaren Alvarado from Southside High School for earning a prestigious spot in the Texas Music Educators Association’s Region 11 Choir this past Saturday, September 28th. The competition took place at Wagner High School, with 18 area high schools participating. Jaren will proudly represent Southside High School on November 2nd when he performs with the Region 11 Choir at East Central High School. A huge congratulations to Jaren and all the Cardinal Choir members who participated in this competition.
Seniors Alexa Celestino and Carlos Herrera to Deliver Tomás Talks at MASBA Conference
Two outstanding seniors from Southside High School, Alexa Celestino and Carlos Herrera, were selected to deliver Tomás Talks at the 2024 Mexican American School Boards Association (MASBA) Conference!
Both Alexa and Carlos have been recognized for their powerful speeches on the impact of student voices. Their commitment to advocacy and leadership is truly inspiring, and their talks are set to shine a light on the importance of student perspectives.
As dedicated members of the Student Council and UIL Academics, Alexa and Carlos have played crucial roles in various school groups, demonstrating their passion for making sure every student’s voice is heard. With graduation on the horizon, they’re especially motivated to make a difference and leave a lasting legacy.
Both students spoke out about the power of student voices. In front of administrators from all over the country, they talked about their experiences at Southside ISD and their work as Student Council members. The two of them stressed the importance of empowering students to be their own advocates, and both students received standing ovations at the end of their speeches.
