Our students are always encouraged to read at home. When students choose to read on their own and read a book of their choice, they develop a love of reading. We have an excellent program called Accelerated Reading (AR) where students read a book then take a short comprehension quiz at the end. This helps train them to read for meaning which is a lifelong skill. Please ask your child about it and have them show you how it works. They can earn points, individual prizes, and classroom prizes. Here are our two students that recently made it to a total of more than one million AR points….so they have now joined the prestigious “Millionaires Club.”
Heritage Elementary
The Fabulous 4th Grade Team
This small but fierce team packs a big academic punch. The team is led by a former Heritage student, Samantha Collier. Joining her are four strong teachers. Laura Hrncir is new to 4th grade, but not to Heritage; and Shannon Messer is new to Heritage, but not to teaching. The Dual Language teacher of the team is Tina Castillo. Rounding out the team is Special Education teacher, Dorothur Odonnell. Together this tight knit group works to empower their students with a love of learning. They use their varied experiences to differentiate instruction to include all students. Pictured from left to right are Collier, Odonnell, Hrncir, Messer, and Castillo.

This week’s Staff Spotlight is 4th grade teacher, Shannon Messer. Although she is new to Heritage, she is not new to teaching. She comes to us with 12 years of experience. Students and staff love her daily stories of crazy things that always seem to happen in her life. Mrs. Messer encourages her students to read and succeed in many ways. One way is by immersing them in a world of Harry Potter in her classroom. She loves animals and has many different kinds ranging from chickens and dogs to horses. We are so happy you joined our team!
Student Spotlight this week is 1st grade student, Noah Camacho. Noah is an exceptionally bright individual that always offers out of the box solutions to problems. He is always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Noah has an amazing gift in making anyone feel welcomed and lights up a room with his smile. Noah also has the ability to strike up a conversation with adults and students and can bring the shyest person out of their shell. Noah enjoys Social Studies though he excels in all subjects. Outside of school he stays active playing football for his team, the Outlaws. Congratulations Noah!

The Heritage Staff Spotlight this week is paraprofessional, Byanca Ceballos. She works with our students in the Special Education Department. Mrs. Ceballos is a graduate of the Education Program at A&M University in San Antonio to become a teacher. She is also the proud mom of two children who both attend Southside ISD; her son at Heritage and her daughter at Menchaca. Even though she is very busy, she has a passion for our students and is a team player. We are so excited to have Mrs. Ceballos working with us!
This week’s Student Spotlight from Heritage is 5th grader, Emma Wright. She comes to school everyday ready to work and help out her fellow students and teachers. Emma spreads joy and laughter every day to anyone she encounters. She is loving, kind, and generous to all her classmates. In addition, Emma is a leader at our school. She knows how things are supposed to run and is happy to let you know. We are extremely proud of Emma and the little lady she is becoming. We wish her well as she moves on to middle school next year.
