Mask Requirement to Stay in Place for All Southside ISD Staff & Students

March 4, 2021 by webmaster

Southside ISD will continue with masks, social distancing, and all of the safety protocols that we have in place. Nothing has changed for our school district.  On March 2, Gov. Greb Abbott announced lifting the mask mandate in Texas in an Executive Order A-34 which addresses the statewide wearing of face coverings (i.e., masks) and takes effect March 10, 2021. TEA’s authority to implement operational requirements for public schools remains in effect (e.g., TEA’s Public Health Guidance).

As a result of the lifting of the order on masks, TEA has updated its Public Health Guidance. Under this updated guidance, a public school system’s current practices on masks may continue unchanged. Local school boards have full authority to determine their local mask policy.

Superintendent Rolando Ramirez says “we will continue with masks, social distancing, and all of the safety protocols that we have in place. Nothing has changed for our school district.”

Distance Learning

March 1, 2021 by hdoria

Freedom Elementary third grade student, M’Ckenzy Poses has taken the term distance learning to a new level. She truly has been learning from afar..  Her mother, Cassey Hickey, tells us, “This year we decided with the way school is being conducted  and the fact that her dad is able to travel with his job that we would do so as a family. We wanted to be able to keep our kids in school in TX and virtual learning allowed us to do that.  Being in Oregon, M’Ckenzy gets up at 5:15 in the morning to start school in Texas. My son logs out of school at 9am and M’Ckenzy is done at 11:30am.  She finishes whatever school work she has left for the day and has the rest of the day to play outside or spend time with her siblings.  We take M’Ckenzy and her siblings out on the weekends to explore the outdoors here in Oregon.” M’Ckenzy tells us, “I love it because I get to travel with my family and see new things that we don’t see in San Antonio.” Her teacher, Ms. Arellano is proud of how well M’Ckenzy is doing with virtual learning.  Ms. Arellano says, “She is always logged in on time and eager to participate with our class.  We look forward to seeing her everyday.  Her classmates think it’s the “coolest thing ever” to have a classmate joining them each day from all the way across the country!”

Girls Who Code

March 1, 2021 by hdoria

For the last few years, one of our clubs here at Freedom Elementary has been Girls Who Code.  Girls Who Code is a non-profit organization that helps young girls have the opportunity to explore and experience coding in a safe and supportive environment with the hope that the young girls will pursue STEM careers and become future female engineers.  Coding encourages the girls to think analytically and to work as a team to create projects that will benefit the community and society.  We meet every week and work with a variety of tools and create activities that are challenging, yet stimulating.
