San Antonio – The Cardinal varsity football team kicked off their home schedule Friday night in a big way with a 41-7 collapse of the visiting Austin Travis Rebels. The Red Storm looking to bounce back from last week’s loss to Sam Houston, put on a dominating performance on both sides of the ball much to the delight of a near overflow Homecoming crowd at Southside Stadium. After an early defensive battle led to 0-0 score at the end of the first quarter, the Cardinal offense finally got in gear to go up 14-0 at halftime. The Rebels were able to close the gap to 14-7 early in the second half, but then Cardinals kicked it into high gear the rest of the way, with the defense not allowing another point and the offense putting up 4 unanswered touchdowns. Once again junior Matt Collier led the Cardinal attack with an amazing 41 carries for 294 yards and 4 TD’s. Sophomore ‘Fast’ Eddie Perez and Senior Andrew Alaniz also added TD runs. Senior QB Marc Garza led an efficient passing attack in support. Sophomores Johnny Herrera and Derrion Sendejo came up with big interceptions, while Junior Mario Aranda and Sophomore Brandon Sandoval led the defensive front in constantly pressuring the Rebel’s quarterback. The Red Storm have a bye next week before kicking off their district play against Eagle Pass Winn at home on September 25th.
