The Cardinal varsity football team encountered a rough start to their 2015 district schedule on Friday night. An efficient passing attack by the visiting CC Winn Mavericks and a game delay due to possible inclement weather contributed to a disappointing 27-16 defeat for the Red Storm. Things looked good early as the Cardinals jumped out in front on a 35 yard touchdown pass from Senior QB Jonny Trevino to Junior wideout Erik Luna. However, following a 30-minute delay in the 2nd quarter due to lightning in the area, the Mavericks took control and built a 21-8 lead going into the 4th quarter. Junior Matt Collier’s touchdown run cut the lead to 21-16, but the Mavericks were able to answer with a touchdown of their own for the final score.
Collier and Senior QB Marc Garza led the Cardinal rushing attack, while Luna contributed 8 catches in the passing game. Junior linebacker Andre Martin led the defense in recording 2 quarterback sacks. Seniors Travis Quillin and Nathan Rosokoff each scored 2-point conversions.
The Cardinals will look to get back on track this Friday night as they travel to Laredo to take on the Nixon Mustangs.
