With our district adding STEAM to the academic components that make up a well rounded education, Heritage has chosen to include STEAM in its Specials Rotations. In addition, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, & Math) was offered to students district wide this summer and many of our students took part, enjoying every day. Recently, two of our students had the opportunity to go behind the scenes at a Southside HS football game on September 17, where they assisted high school students on the field and in the booth of the jumbotron. In the daily Music, Art, and PE classes teachers have been including different aspects of STEAM into their lessons. Music class has offered students an opportunity to learn about vibrations and sound waves. Art class has been using the Engineering Design Process to plan, create, and modify their art pieces. While in PE, students have been using movement to push themselves into a deeper understanding of their bodies. The rest of the year will see five of the body systems taught during Specials and also an additional lesson taught to non-intramural athletes once a week (while the athletes practice). These vocabulary rich lessons will benefit our students throughout their lifetimes as they see anything is possible as long as you have a problem solving mentality.

Cardinal Spotlight 9/27/21
The Heritage staff Cardinal Spotlight is 1st grade teacher, Barbi Oliver. Ms. Oliver has been a member of the Heritage team since the first year our school opened; so this is her 23rd year. She works hard to build relationships with her students and parents. Her gentle nature and way of working with students is definitely her strongest attribute. Ms. Oliver also is a teacher that really builds a strong classroom community, with respect (this month’s virtue) being at the forefront. Thank you for all you do for our students!
Leeroy Martinez is this week’s student Cardinal Spotlight. Leeroy always comes to school with a positive attitude. He works hard everyday and is such a good role model for his younger sister. He always wants to help around the classroom and is super kind to all of his classmates. Leeroy continues to do his best everyday no matter what. We are so happy that he is at our school! Congratulations Cardinal of the Week!

Heritage’s staff Cardinal Spotlight this week is one of our invaluable paraprofessionals, Penny Carroll. Penny has worked at Heritage for two years. Prior to this, she was one of our most reliable substitute teachers! We are so happy to have her on our team. She is a proud mother of a Southside middle school student and a grandmother to three Southside students as well. For her, the Southside School District is a family affair with her husband, daughter, and son-in-law also employed by the district; although we know we snagged the queen of the group. Thanks for all you do Ms. Penny!
Talk about a hard worker! Sofia Morales continually amazes her teachers and classmates with her giving nature, warm heart, and soft spoken leadership abilities. Sofia perseveres when she faces challenges and has the endurance needed to see them through. She is a very responsible student who is always willing to help and encourage others, no matter the difficulty they face, and seems to sense when a friend is in need of a kind word. Recently, Sofia was chosen to join our School Safety Patrol and we couldn’t be more proud! Congratulations on making it into our Cardinal Spotlight! |

Heritage’s Staff spotlight this week is 4th grade teacher, Laura Hrncir. Mrs. Hrncir is a graduate of Southside ISD and a proud Southside parent too. She has taught several grade levels and is a leader on our campus, always willing to help a teammate. We appreciate her flexibility and for the wealth of knowledge she shares with her team. We know how much she likes superheroes, so we’ll just say, “You’re one amazing Superwoman!”
Our Student Spotlight is 5th grade student, Guadalupe Frias. She is a student who is very eager to learn. When things get tough, she doesn’t let that get her down. She continues to try and do her best no matter how hard the journey is. With continued hard work, we know she will be successful. We are so proud of you Guadalupe, keep up the great attitude and work ethic! |

Heritage’s Staff spotlight this week is Sofia Rangel. Mrs. Rangel serves as our Bilingual Inclusion paraprofessional. She worked with us previously in a similar role, but left us for a few years to work on her Bachelor’s Degree in Education and now has returned to Heritage. Mrs. Rangel is getting close to reaching her goal of graduation, when we hope she’ll keep Heritage in mind. It has been so refreshing to have this positive, team centered member of our staff (family) back with us! |
