Freedom Elementary School received its name following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. To mark the school’s 20th anniversary since its opening, the campus held a community celebration that included student performances, nachos and paletas, and the school’s current and former principals. 40-year resident Linda Cook brought her granddaughter to the event. “I remember nothing being here when it was first built,” Cook said. She also felt compelled to praise the campus staff and district administration for the positive growth she’s witnessing. “He (Superintendent Rolando Ramirez) has done a lot. I’ve seen a lot of improvement, and it tells me when you have a good leader, you can have good teamwork.” As they’ve done for the last 20 years, still today, administrators and teachers at Freedom Elementary are happily preparing Southside ISD’s next generation of leaders.
