Southside ISD science teacher Mr. Jason Garcia was teaching a biology lesson to his Losoya Middle School 8th graders when a knock on the door changed the day. Garcia, who is the 2023 Southside ISD Teacher of the Year, also learned he is the recipient of the KENS 5 Credit Human Excel Award. Garcia is a Southside Cardinal to the bone. He graduated as valedictorian in the Southside High School Class of 1994. His three children have attended Southside ISD and all of his teaching years have been at Losoya Middle School. Garcia has a passion for helping Southside students succeed. “I want them to know that they can be whatever they want to be. That they are just as good as students anywhere else,” Garcia said. He is also a Losoya football and track coach. Not only that, he loves to work in the yard and says he’s an amazing cook. However, teaching is his passion and he loves being in the classroom. He wants to see his students excel. Consequently, it’s no surprise that Garcia is not only the District Teacher of the Year but also the winner of a $1000 award as the KENS 5 Credit Human Excel Award winner.
