San Antonio responds to help fill district’s food pantry

The Southside ISD food pantry appealed to the greater San Antonio community for help in May and the response has been tremendous. An estimated one ton of food has been collected for the pantry’s summer food drive. The reality is the only meals some children will get in the area comes from the free breakfast and lunch they receive at school. When Dalia Torrez of Stephens Roofing heard that fact, she immediately took action. Dalia went to the store that weekend and purchased food children could easily eat during the summer months. “I know what it’s like to be hungry and I want to make sure these children are okay,” she said. San Antonio Police Chief William McManus’ office put out the call to his officers and they responded. Local stations WOAI-TV and KENS-TV also got involved by producing stories on the pantry’s need for food. About 1,200 people monthly are receiving food from the pantry and monthly food distributions. Donations and volunteers are always needed. If your business or organization would like to help call Director of Public Relations Mr. Randy Escamilla at 210-882-1600 ext. 5125 or you can email him at randy.escamilla@southsideisd.org.
