Want to know a secret? Our school would not function without our Paraprofessional Team. These ladies are our SUPPORT staff. They work with students in small groups or one on one, they assist with monitoring students during lunch or planning, they assist teachers as needed, they help with decorating and maintaining a vibrant school environment, and they even jump in as an emergency substitute when we are down a staff member. If you know one of them, please take a moment to thank them for what they do for our community.
Heritage Elementary
Assistant Principal’s Week
Thank you Mr. Martinez for all your hard work and dedication to our school. We appreciate you!
Fourth Grade Writing Blitz
Our 4th grade students have been working very hard all year to learn all the new material on their grade level along with filling in some of the gaps that presented themselves from last Spring’s pandemic lockdown. But recently they’ve added a little boost to their writing lessons in the way of a “Writing Blitz”. Our teachers analyzed data to see what the specific writing needs of our students were, then created fun lessons to review these writing skills just before our students take the STAAR Writing Test on Tuesday, April 6. We are proud of our students’ hard work and of our 4th grade teachers!
Carol Calderon receives Texas A&M University honor
Texas A&M University-San Antonio selected Carol Calderon as their teacher of the month for March. They select teachers from across San Antonio that go above and beyond to promote higher education through conversations, décor, and lessons with their students. If you know Ms. Calderon, she embodies these things even in the way she shows up in her daily costumes to motivate students. Ms. Calderon received a check for $1,000 and all of her students received a certificate and a swag bag!
Texas Lesson Study
During the 2018-2019 school year, a group of Heritage teachers made a commitment to collaborate on a Texas Education Agency program. The program is called the Texas Lesson Study. The lesson study requires teachers to work together to develop, teach and assess research based lessons. The goal of the lesson study is to help teachers across the state improve their effectiveness in the classroom by using these research-based lessons. Elizabeth Lopez and Melissa Martinez, both 5th grade teachers during the 2018-2019 school year worked together to create a lesson. Many long hours were spent analyzing data and researching best strategies to create their lesson. The following semester, Ms. Lopez and Ms. Martinez served as facilitators for Venessa Cerda, Angel Monroy, and Karla Montemayor. At the time, Ms. Cerda and Ms. Monroy taught 1st grade and Ms. Montemayor taught 2nd grade. These five teachers continued the process to develop two lessons. The lessons were submitted to the Texas Education Agency. All three lessons developed by the teachers were approved for publication. The teachers were recently notified of this distinguished honor. The lessons will be available through Texas Gateway. These dynamic, research-based lessons will help teachers from across Texas improve their instruction. We are proud of the work these five teachers did.
