Matthey Middle School hosted the San Antonio Area Special Olympics Basketball Individual Skills Competition on Wednesday, February 28th, 2024! This is the first time Southside ISD has hosted an event since 2018. There were a total of six Delegations/Districts with over 60 Special Olympics Athletes including LaVernia, Judson ISD, Hondo ISD, and some adult teams.
As an essential part of the Opening Ceremonies, Matthey 6th grader, Isaiah Bazan led the whole crowd in saying the Special Olympics Athlete Oath. To follow, 8th grader Grace Boyer-Mercer and 7th grader Marcos Garza carried the Olympic Torch. Southside is proud of these athletes for leading the Opening Ceremonies, the Cardinals for competing, and all of our guest athletes.
