Students helping family who lost home to fire

Southside ISD students are spending their final days of summer helping a family who lost their home and their pets to a fire on Tuesday, July 17. Yasmine Gonzales, along with her husband and three children ages 4, 8, and 14, were just returning home when they found their house on Whispering Winds Drive surrounded by scores of fire trucks. The fire burned everything they owned.

Gonzales is a para-professional at Heritage Elementary.

Students help family

Since the fire, students and teachers from the school district  have been helping the family by sifting through the ashes searching for pictures or anything of significance.

Friends have organized a barbecue plate sale Sunday, July 29, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the B&N Sports Bar, 3705 Roosevelt Avenue. Plates are $7 and can be bought at the event.
