With the end of the first semester Southside FFA had a great Fall Semester. It has been a record breaking year for the FFA it all started with members participating in the Alamo District Leadership Lab at Somerset High School. This event is geared towards sophomores through seniors to gain leadership experience and knowledge through work stations to help promote teamwork and leadership qualities. Next, our 8th graders and freshman members participated in Area VII Greenhand Camp at Floresville High School. This event is tailored to members who are in their first or second year of membership. It is very similar to the Leadership Lab, but geared towards students who may never have had any experience leading. This was our largest group to date with more than 30 members going.
After leadership events concluded we were already in full swing with Fall Career Development Events (CDE’s) and Leadership Development Events (LDE’s). This was our first year to have two teams compete in Fall CDE’s with our Range Team finishing 11th in their first Area Contest and our Plant ID Team consisting of Annabelle Alvarado, Alexia Torres, Izabella Kibiger, and Noah Kibiger bringing home the 8th Place banner. No sooner had we finished with Fall CDE’s we were gearing up for LDE’s. This was another record breaking group with the most participation we have had to date. We had a Greenhand and Senior Quiz team, Radio Broadcasting Team, 2 Greenhand Creed Speakers, 2 Spanish Creed Speakers, and a student in Job Interview. We went to several invitational contests with Melany Avila bringing home a First Place Plaque from the Palo Alto Invitational. District LDE’s was another record breaking event with our Greenhand Quiz team consisting of Benjamin Ebner, Eduardo Galindo, Kayla Craig, and Cesar Cavzos coming in 3rd bringing home a banner and Melany Avila bringing home the second place banner and qualifying for Area which is a first for our chapter. At Area Melany was able to bring home a 4th Place banner just missing qualifying for state. Finally, in December over the second week of the Christmas break several students participated in the Bexar County Junior Livestock Show. Placings from the show can be found below. We had 25 exhibitors qualify for the Auction of Champions which was the largest number of exhibitors from Southside to qualify for auction in a single year.
With a record breaking 80 members and 14 junior members Southside FFA is on the rise and looking forward to a great Spring Show Season and CDE Season. Check back at the end of the year for a Spring Review. If you are interested in getting your child into the FFA or Junior FFA please call the Agriculture Department at (210) 882-1600 ext 1584 or email steven.iredale@nullsouthsideisd.org, or swing by the AG complex located behind the Southside High School ACES gym after school and talk to members or advisors.
