November 7, 2024 by lhuron

The Matthey MS Student Cardinal Spotlight goes to our 8th grader Tristan Abrego. TJ as he is known by his friends and family was the starting quarterback of our zone champion 8th grade football team.  TJ is a great student athlete.  He is a role model student who always strives to lead by example.  We look forward to great things from TJ in the near future.
The Matthey MS Staff Cardinal Spotlight is coach Robert Mayberry.  Coach Mayberry has served the Southside community for over 10 years.  He currently serves as our ISS teacher and 8th grade football head coach.  Under his tutelage our 8th grade boys captured a zone championship and claimed an undefeated season in zone play.  He helps mold these young men into champions on and off the field.  Thank you Coach Mayberry for your service to our community.

Matthey above the national teacher shortage

Matthey above the national teacher shortage

The 2022-2023 Matthey school year is in full swing. Teachers are teaching, sports are in session and students are excited to be back in class with their friends again. The hallways are filled with laughter and smiling faces, but most students have no idea the school is dealing with a teacher shortage.

Justin Buckner, an 8th grade ELAR teacher, said,”I’m confident that we as educators will be successful in getting our students to a high academic level even with a teacher shortage. Parents can definitely help by having their children read at home”.

According to Brian Lopez from the Texas Tribune, there has been a national teacher shortage for quite some time, but the pandemic made the situation worse. Even though things seem to be getting back to normal, many educators are simply fearful of the virus, but this is not the case for everyone.

April Matelski, a four-year substitute teacher for Matthey, said,”I didn’t realize there was a teacher shortage. Everything seems normal to me, business as usual”.

When the pandemic started, Matthey teachers had to teach their students online and learn the world of Zoom and Google classroom. Although this was unfamiliar territory, teachers found fun and creative ways to engage their students.

Jaylynn Valdez, Matthey’s 8th grade VIP student, said, “I’ve been enjoying my classes and having fun being on campus. I’ve just been doing my work and had no idea we’re short on teachers. Matthey is doing a good job and must have everything under control”.

Miguel Martell, principal of Matthey Middle School, explained that his plan to overcome teacher shortage has been about proper student scheduling and teachers filling in on subjects when needed.

Cardinals CARE – Antibullying Campaign

August 26, 2022 by srincon

Southside ISD is committed to all safety and security protocols and solutions. Cardinals CARE (C- Compassionate, A- Accepting, R – Respectful, and Empowered)  is an initiative inspired by parents, community members, students, security experts, and staff input. Southside ISD recently held a Safety and Security committee meeting where ideas and critiques were shared. Although we have many programs, protocols, and procedures in place, one of the district’s numerous efforts includes communicating ways to prevent harmful activities to all staff and students. The Cardinals CARE Campaign includes a robust marketing initiative of posters, videos, banners, and incentives to encourage our community to “See Something, Say Something.”  The entire program falls under the Stay Alert reporting and detection system the district already has. For more on the direct numbers and website for Stay Alert, Click here.

Cardinals Care also includes a dress code policy that encourages unity and good behavior. The Cardinal VIP program is also part of the family of incentives that celebrates our outstanding and best-behaved cardinals. In the coming days, be on the lookout for messages from our cardinals on how you can help us all stay alert and safe.
