In recognition of National Bullying Prevention Month, Officer Cardenas lead an important conversation on what bullying is, how to report it, and how to stand up for others. Students learned how to be upstanders—not bystanders—and help keep our campus a place where everyone feels safe, respected, and included.

Pearce Elementary proudly hosted its first-ever Safety Patrol Swearing-In Ceremony, where 36 students took the pledge to serve as campus patrols. These dedicated students will play an important role in supporting the Pearce community—assisting with parent drop-off, holding doors, monitoring breezeways, and helping at campus events such as Career Day. They will also take part in leadership meetings, building skills that go beyond the classroom.
The event was led by Principal Brenda Gonzales and Officer Ruben Cardenas, who will be working closely with the students throughout the year as they grow in leadership and service.
Adding to the excitement, students were surprised by a special guest—McGruff the Crime Dog from the San Antonio Police Department—who reminded them to “take a bite out of crime.” In addition, Southside ISD Chief of Police, Chief Don Berger, attended the ceremony and delivered an inspiring speech congratulating the students on their commitment to safety and leadership.
The ceremony also featured a special performance by the Pearce Elementary Choir, who sang “God Bless America,” making the occasion even more memorable for students, staff, and families in attendance.
This celebration highlighted the responsibility and pride that come with being part of the Southside Safe initiative and pays tribute to following the example of our first responders. Congratulations to all the newly sworn-in Pearce Safety Patrol students—we look forward to seeing your leadership in action!
