Perla Rojas

Menchaca is delighted to introduce Mrs. Perla Rojas as the latest Cardinal Spotlight honoree. With an impressive teaching career spanning over 25 years, Mrs. Rojas continues to positively influence every student she encounters. As one of our dedicated PK4 Dual Language educators, she maintains high expectations while wholeheartedly embracing her role. Her collaborative spirit shines as she effectively partners with colleagues to ensure student success.
Mrs. Rojas has crafted structured centers tailored to each student’s interests. Among these centers, the dramatic play area stands as a favorite, where students engage in conversations while immersing themselves in various roles. Recently, Mrs. Rojas led a well- planned professional learning community (PLC) focused on the importance of dramatic play in the classroom. During this PLC, teachers gained valuable insights, fresh ideas, and a platform for engaging discussions. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Rojas for her willingness to step outside her comfort zone and generously share her wealth of knowledge and expertise with our staff. Her dedication and passion for serving our students are greatly appreciated!
Kindergarteners at Menchaca Early Childhood Learning Center are learning how to save lives — with teddy bears.
The campus nurse said students who attend the South Side center live far from hospitals, and the lesson could keep kids calm in an emergency.
All 300 kindergarteners were singing the baby shark song while practicing CPR movements on a teddy bear, turning a serious conversation into an age appropriate one.
Although a 5 year old may not be able to effectively save someone’s life, Southside ISD nurse Heather Siebert said the lesson could keep a child calm.
“They’re less likely to panic, They’re less likely to start crying. They’re less likely to be scared when EMS does show up,” Siebert said.
The closest hospital or emergency room to the school is at least 15 to 30 minutes away.
Siebert said every minute matters, and any child, no matter age can make that difference in an emergency.
“Any sort of way to help themselves can be the difference between life and death. So, it is really important in this area where our resources are so far, few and far between,” Siebert said.
Students received a teddy bear, a workbook and a first-aid kit, thanks to a Southside Education Foundation grant. The district is looking for future funding to hold the CPR class next school year.

Students in Mrs. Cervantes’s PK-4 class created Menchaca Early Childhood Center’s very first Donut Shop in the outdoor learning area! Outdoor learning environments offer students opportunities to explore and learn. Much of what students do in the classroom can be easily translated to the outdoor environment. This can be done by incorporating safety, design, opportunities for inquiry, space, and accessibility to an outdoor learning space. We love that MECC students have this opportunity!
