Cardinal Spotlight 5/3/2024

Valentina Gonzalez Cabrera is our bright ray of sunshine here at Heritage Elementary. You will easily spot her in a crowd as the one with the biggest smile on her face. She greets all students and staff, and treats everyone with the utmost respect. At the end of each day, she salutes all the teachers and staff, while mentioning how eager she is to return for the next day. She is currently a first grader on our campus, but is quickly evolving into a student leader. We are anxious to see her accomplishments play out over the next several years.

Mrs. Puente  and the Heritage team made their presence felt statewide by hosting Commissioner Morath this week. Mrs. Puente is always prepared for everything that is requested of Heritage. When something is asked of her she is quick to deliver. Her staff will follow her example and strive to be the very best in any of the district initiatives. Keep up the great work Mrs. Puente!

A very quiet young man with a great sense of humor, David Plascencia is a wonderful 2nd grader at Heritage Elementary.  He enjoys being a big brother to 5 year old Davin, but prefers not sharing campuses.  Still, he has fun with his brother and his family, especially when playing board games.  In addition to his family, David has fun with his two chihuahuas, Princess and Bacon.  Otherwise, he is a fan of movies, either funny or scary, and various games on his tablet.  His favorite class is STEAM where he learns about things he has never seen before and gets to try different hands-on activities.  Recess, PE, dismissal and lunch are his favorite parts of the school day.  Those are the times he doesn’t have to be as quiet, sitting in uncomfortable chairs, listening to someone talk.  He really wishes classrooms had more plushies to sit on.  David thinks it might make sitting easier.   Although one would never know it, he can be very loud, but only at home because he doesn’t want to get in trouble at school.

This week Heritage is spotlighting our hardworking instructional paraprofessionals!  This group of amazing ladies goes above and beyond to support the Heritage students and teachers.  Patient and positive are just two words that describe these amazing ladies.  They are quiet workhorses who put the needs’ of the students first. Our campus would not run smoothly without their support and dedication.   We truly do appreciate all that they do!

A very social and friendly student originally from Eagle Pass, Devin Arispe is an engaging third grader who joined Heritage in 2023.  The only things he loves more than Math is recess and Ms. Tapia.  Bright and articulate, it is obvious that he also loves learning.  Because he is very responsible, Devin makes sure he does his homework and chores before watching his favorite show, Naruto, or playing his favorite game, Super Smash Bros.  His chores include washing dishes, cleaning his room, and taking out the trash, but he really looks forward to caring for his 5 dogs: a Great Dane, three miniature poodles, and one to be determined pupper.  Devin describes himself as “chatty…sometimes.  When asked what he will be when he grows up, Devin might be the president, “…maybe…”

This week’s staff spotlight is Estrella Melendez.  Ms. Melendez is new to Heritage.  She is one of our Special Education paraprofessionals.  Ms. Melendez is a recent graduate of Southside High School, class of 2022.  She started working at Heritage in September.   She loves working with children. Ms. Melendez has dreams of becoming a teacher and has plans to attend college in the near future to major in education!  She is the oldest of four children and spends lots of her free time helping her three younger siblings.  Ms. Melendez has a kind heart for animals too.  She loves cats and would love to rescue every cat she sees!  We are so happy that you are a part of the Heritage family!

This week’s staff spotlight is Alma Gennero.  Ms. Gennero is new to Heritage.  She is a 2nd grade Dual Language teacher.  Ms. Gennero previously worked for Southside ISD for ten years. She truly enjoys working with children. Teaching is her passion!   Ms. Gennero has a strong work ethic and is very dedicated to her students.  Ms. Gennero uses every available minute to work hard to help students become more successful.  In her spare time, Ms. Gennero likes to read and work on arts and crafts.  She is an avid Texas Longhorns fan!  She has seven grown children and seventeen grandchildren.  We are so happy that you joined our team.  Congratulations on being our Cardinal of the Week!

This week’s student spotlight is Carter Nelson.  A first grade student with Ms. Oliver, he is outstanding in many ways.  Very polite and mature, he enjoys reading chapter books.  In fact, he estimates that he has read more than 50 this school year.  With two older sisters, one older brother, and a little sister, he is able to engage with people of all ages as he is very articulate.

While Carter loves Roblox, he especially enjoys soccer and basketball, which he plays with his older brother and father.  Currently, Dad is his coach, but he looks forward to intramurals when he is older.  Although both soccer and basketball are fun, his favorite sport is basketball and he loves the Houston Rockets.  At school, Carter enjoys social studies and studying natural processes and their impact on people.

Carter misses his grandfather in Houston, but we are so glad to have him here at Heritage.

This week’s staff spotlight is Eneida Juarez.  Ms. Juarez is our new Dual Language teacher for 5th grade.  Ms. Juarez is eager to learn the new content, and her work in this area does not go unnoticed. Ms. Juarez is a quiet workhorse!  She has a class of 28 students and does a fantastic job of managing such a large group.   She has many qualities that make her a solid teacher, mainly her positive attitude and her willingness to collaborate with her colleagues. Ms. Juarez is the proud parent of a first grade student in our Dual Language program.  Ms. Juarez, we are so happy that you joined our Heritage team! Congratulations on being our Cardinal of the week!

This week’s student spotlight is Andres Martinez Chable.  Although new to Heritage, he has already made quite the impression.  A respectful and earnest third grader in Mrs. Guerrero’s class, he works hard and especially loves math.  At school, Andres works diligently and enjoys learning as much as playing with his friends.  Outside of school, he entertains himself by playing hide and seek with his older brother and coloring.  However, he also entertains others.  Andres performs not only at his church but also travels to other churches to play the shofar, to sing, to dance, and to preach.  Andres hopes others will be kind, be respectful, and be helpful to one another, in and out of school.  Heritage is very proud of Andres.

Porfirio Perez is a wonderful, kind first grader at Heritage.  He consistently makes good choices in class and works hard.  A loving big brother, Porfirio is very giving, sharing his things and caring for others.  Yet his kindness is not limited to people, Porfirio also loves animals, especially cats and lizards.  In addition, he enjoys singing in church and even has his own business, a lemonade stand.  Porfirio is a very busy young man and a pleasure to have at Heritage.

Mrs. Puente  and her team are extremely competitive. While her campus has the title of having the highest STAAR scores in the district, she and her team work tirelessly to maintain that status. Mrs. Puente is always prepared for everything that is requested of Heritage. When something is asked of her she is quick to deliver. She is a hard worker and goes above and beyond what is asked of her. Her staff follow her example and strive to be the very best in any of the district initiatives. Keep up the great work Mrs. Puente!
