Students in 3rd through 5th grade can join the coding club. The club learns how computer science has and can change the world.
The club meets after school on Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:00 and we learn the bare basics of coding and about the roles of computer scientists. The students learn how to manipulate code in a program called “Scratch”. We learn functions and make and use them to complete tasks. For instance, we create a character and we tell the character what to look like, how to move, where to move, and what sound to make. We also use our time to learn and do STEAM activities in order to see how technology is a part of science, engineering, art, and math. Currently, we are learning about important people that have made those contributions.
Below is a picture of the 5th graders at the Apple Store at North Star. They were learning how to code with a robot. They were inputting codes and making the robot move in a maze.
