Cinco de Mayo
Students get ready to march in the Cinco de Mayo Parade

Parents and visitors  stood to cheer and watch  the  parade of Fiesta Floats go by as Freedom held its annual Cinco de Mayo celebration.   The parade was a lot of fun for kids and teachers, alike.  Parents lined the parade route in the front of the school to cheer on the students, and students lined the parade route with their classmates to view the beautiful floats, and cheer on their friends.

The Float Contest winners marched in the parade with their award-winning floats.  They were:   1st Place- Eric Torres – PK;  2nd Place- Nicholas Coronado – 4th grade;  3rd Place- Gabriella Barnes – Kinder.  (Extra Awards included  Most Artistic-Abigail Torres-3rd Grade;  Best Environmental Message-Joe Ramirez – 3rd Grade;  Best in Show-Prehistoric-Aden Casias-PK). Congratulations to all of our winners!!

A total of 12 Kings and Queens of the parade were carried on a beautifully decorated float because they were the winners of the Henry’s Heroes Fundraiser.  They raised over $2,100 for the American Heart Association in one day!  After the parade, the students were ushered into the gym where the Southside High School Mariachi and the Southside High School Conjunto, “Los Cardenales” performed.

All was merriment as teachers, and students alike, clapped to the lively music.  This celebration is an annual event held here at Freedom Elementary.

Texas Farm Bureau and Southwest Dairy Farmers Visit Freedom

April 19, 2017 by webmaster

Representatives from the Texas Farm Bureau and Southwest Dairy Farmers came to Freedom to visit with the students, and to teach them a few things about farming and agriculture.

Emilee Trlica, a representative and area coordinator with the Texas Farm Bureau, spoke to students about agriculture, and about how it plays a part in practically every part of our lives, from what we eat to what we wear!  She had students make very cool “living necklaces”, which were tiny zip lock bags, with a wet cotton ball and a seed inside, hanging on a string. Students placed them around their necks and wore them for the rest of the day.  Students who are patient will end up with a plant to care for in a few days!  Students loved their living necklaces! Thank you Mrs. Trlica!

Steve Braneke from Southwest Dairy Farmers is a former AG teacher who taught students  for 28 years  before working with the Southwest Dairy Farmers, so he knows a thing or two about agriculture and livestock!  He wanted to teach our students about the dairy cattle industry, so he brought along his assistant, Dottie, who happens to be a dairy cow!  Mr. Braneke taught the students about Dottie, and spoke to them about what it takes to care for dairy cattle and how we benefit from the dairy industry.    He answered questions from students, and even showed them how cows are milked.  The students really enjoyed their visit with Mr. Braneke and Dottie.

Thank you to our visitors for making learning so much fun!
