Pennies for Patients

November 7, 2016 by webmaster

Pennies  for Patients is a yearly campaign that benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Once again our campus facilitator this year is our own Coach Mendez!  This year, we honored two  Cancer Survivors from our Freedom staff:  Mrs. Hurtado, compennies-for-patients-logoputer lab aide, and Ms. Roberts, art teacher.  Freedom collected $2080 dollars this year, which bumps our total up to $12,000.00 in the past 9 years, including this year.  All Freedom classes compete to see who can bring in the most pennies!  This year’s 1st place class winner was Ms. Breland’s class.   The 2nd place winner was Mrs. Chulo’s class, and the 3rd place winner was Mrs. Morales’ class.
Ms. Breland’s class will get a luncheon sponsored by the Olive Garden Italian Restaurant!  Congratulations to them, and to all the students at Freedom Elementary for donating to such a worthy cause!  Freedom students ROCK!!

Marathon Kids Running Club

November 7, 2016 by webmaster

Marathon Kids is a running club open to students, and is sponsored by Nike.

This is marathon-kidsthe first year that Freedom Elementary is participating.  Interested students were given permission forms and those who decided to participate  paid a $20 entry fee.

Coach Maria Mendez is the campus facilitator for this club.  She gave us some information about the students and about the requirements that the students must fulfill.   “I have 5 girls, and 8 boys participating.  We began on Sept. 15, and will continue through May 18, 2017.  We run every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, for 20 minutes, which is equivalent to 1 mile.  Students also run on their own and keep track of their miles on their mileage log.  Between the dates above, these students will run 4 Marathons, or the equivalent of 104.8 miles!  I also run/walk with them.  They receive an incentive for every Marathon they complete.  I am very proud of our 13 students, and wish them well in the future, as RUNNERS!”

GOOD LUCK, FREEDOM MARATHON KIDS!

Freedom Students participated in Red Ribbon Week in October.  Red Ribbon Week is a drug prevention campaign that is held every year across the United States in which students participate in daily fun activities focused on drug prevention.

In addition to fun daily activities, Freedom Students  participated in a Red Ribbon Rally in the gym on Friday, where they took the DRUG FREE PLEDGE.  They  also participated in a mini walk-a-thon  during their specials classes.

Congratulations to Freedom Students for Pledging to be DRUG FREE!!

***************************************************************************

Red Ribbon Week was first established in 1985, to commemorate the life and death of DEA agent, Enrique “KiKi” Camarena.  Camarena devoted his life to the fight against illegal drugs.  Click here to read his story.

Freedom Fall Carnival was a GREAT SUCCESS!

October 21, 2016 by webmaster

fall-carnival-pic-for-web

Many Freedom families came out to enjoy a night of fun at the Freedom Fall Carnival.  Students were allowed to wear their Halloween costumes just to add to the fun, so everywhere you looked, there were superheroes and princesses, witches and pirates parading around the fun-filled event playing games and gobbling delicious treats.  It was a great turnout, and everyone had a wonderful time!

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO MADE OUR FALL CARNIVAL A GREAT SUCCESS!

Traffic Flow Change begins Monday October 17

October 17, 2016 by webmaster

Beginning Monday October 17, there will be new changes for pick up and drop off to accommodate the traffic flow and to provide more space for parents every day.

Freedom Elementary administration and the Southside ISD police department have made the following changes.

If you live West of Highway 37 you will follow the red arrow route.

If you live East of Highway 37 you will follow the blue arrow route.

  • Make sure that your child is seated on the side of your vehicle nearest to the curb so that they can exit safely where staff will be waiting.
  • Officer Cardenas will be directing traffic in the area where the buses exit behind the cafeteria area.
  • Drop off times will be at 7:00 a.m. when staff is on duty. Do not leave your child unattended. If this occurs it will be brought to your attention and further action may be taken.

These changes will be in effect MONDAY,  OCTOBER 17 2016.  Please follow the directions of the traffic flow so that you may enter and exit in a safe and efficient manner. Safety is a top priority and it is imperative that you drive slowly in and out of the staging areas.
