Student Meal Cost: Breakfast and Lunch is at no cost for all Southside ISD students.
Lunch includes an entrée, grain choice, fruits and vegetables. Students must take at least 3 of 5 food components. One of the choices must be a 1/2 cup of vegetable or a 1/2 cup of fruit for the meal to be counted as reimbursable. If a complete meal is not selected by student, meal will be charged at A la Carte pricing. Offer vs. Serve (OVS) is an approved USDA method for meal service and menu planning. Southside has implemented this method for lunch at all Elementaries, Middle Schools, and High School campus-es except Menchaca Early Childhood Center and Breakfast in the classrooms. OVS allows students to decline minimum food components in a reimbursable breakfast or lunch. OVS has several benefits: it permits students to choose the foods they want to eat and reduce food waste. Because students may choose fewer selections under OVS, guidance is provided on what constitutes a reimbursable breakfast and lunch. Students choosing more than the required components will be charged A la Carte pricing.
All of our grain items offered in our Breakfast & Lunch program are “whole grain rich”. Consuming whole grains offers students a number of health benefits. Whole grains are great sources of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which contribute to good health. Eating whole-grain foods may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Eating whole grains may also lower triglycerides, improve insulin control, help with weight management, and slow buildup of plaque in arteries. The fiber in whole grains helps promote digestive health.
