The Matthey Middle School Jazz Ensemble delivered an exceptional performance at the Palo Alto College Jazz Festival on Friday, April 17, 2026. The ensemble’s commitment to musical excellence and weeks of dedicated rehearsals since February culminated in a remarkable achievement, earning the highest possible recognition.
The Matthey MS Jazz Ensemble received a coveted First Division rating from all three adjudicators. This unanimous decision is a testament to the group’s precision, dynamic control, musicianship, and overall high-quality performance. The judges were highly impressed with the ensemble’s repertoire choices and their mature interpretation of the jazz standards.
Adding to the ensemble’s success, two of its standout soloists received individual high honors:
- Nathan Rivera, playing the alto saxophone, was specifically chosen as the Outstanding Soloist for the entire Middle School Division. His improvisational skills and confident delivery captivated the judges and highlighted his exceptional talent among his peers.
- Johnathan Mascorro, on trumpet, was recognized with the All Star Certificate. This award was specifically based on his memorable and expressive solo performance on the classic tune, “It Had to Be You.” Johnathan’s performance demonstrated a deep connection to the material and outstanding technical ability.
The entire Matthey MS Jazz Ensemble, their director, and their families are celebrating this significant accomplishment.
