For the third year in a row, Southside ISD proudly hosted the Special Olympics Basketball Individual Skills and FUNdamentals competition at Matthey Middle School, bringing together athletes from across the region for a day of competition, inclusion, and celebration. The opening ceremony featured the National Anthem performed by the Matthey Middle School Choir under the direction of Ms. Liandra Winfre, along with a spirited performance by the Matthey Middle School Mariachi group. The torch was carried by Ava Cruz (Southside High School), Alejandro Aguilera (Matthey Middle School), and Jess Morales (Heritage Elementary), while Matthey athlete Mason Martinez recited the Special Olympics Oath. With the Matthey Middle School Hype Squad cheering on participants, athletes from Southside Cardinals, Roper, SouthSide Heroes, La Vernia, San Antonio State Supported Living Center, San Antonio Express, Judson ISD, Nets Dancing Dinosaurs, and East Central ISD competed in a day that celebrated determination, teamwork, and the true spirit of the Special Olympics.
At Southside ISD, moments like these reflect our commitment to ensuring every student is supported, celebrated, and empowered.
