Joined by grandparents at Heritage Elementary early in February, the founder of the Texas Grandparents Raising Grandkids (TXGRG) organization shared about her own journey of becoming a grandparent raising her grandkids. A story familiar to many households, with grandparents taking on two or more children overnight with little to no support.
TXGRG shared opportunities available to our grandparents, such as post-adoption subsidies and respite care services. Resources that, before the meeting, our grandparents didn’t know were available to them.
Executive Director Mercedes Bristol created the organization after being inspired by a support group in NISD that helped navigate her new life raising grandkids. Now, almost 7 years later, she has helped hundreds of grandfamilies by creating a space for the community to support each other and have a sense of belonging.
TXGRG will now have a monthly support group at Southside HS, where they will continue to dive into resources that support your family, give you a space to connect with others, and, overall, remind you that you are not alone on this journey.
Be sure to stop by our first session on March 24th from 10am to 12pm in the SHS Library. The group will be available to both English and Spanish speakers.
