What began 20 years ago as a small elementary school in portable buildings behind Losoya Middle School and Pearce Elementary has grown into Gallardo Elementary, a thriving campus now serving over 600 students.
To celebrate this milestone, Principal Claudia Rios Wright and the Gallardo staff hosted a special anniversary event with the theme “Honoring Our Past, Shaping Our Future.” Former students, staff, and community members from across the last two decades came together to share memories, photos, and reflections on the impact Gallardo has had on their lives.
A highlight of the celebration included remarks from Anna Bustamante, great-granddaughter of Julian C. Gallardo and teacher at Southside High School, accompanied by her sister, Helen Doria. They spoke about Mr. Gallardo’s role in helping establish the foundation of Southside ISD, including his land donation for the Carmen School and his service as a certified teacher. His dedication to expanding educational access in this rural community is one of the reasons the district named Gallardo Elementary in his honor 20 years ago.
There was also a special recognition for Mrs. Gracie De La Cruz, who has served as a dedicated educator at Gallardo since the campus first opened in 2005. Her commitment to students and support of the school community have made a lasting impact.
As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Gallardo Elementary, we honor the history that has shaped us and look forward to a bright future for the students we serve.
