National Champions! Matthey MS BBQ Team

(San Antonio, TX)- Southside students are Champions. Our Matthey Middle School students proved it on Friday, June 6th. Congratulations to our Matthey BBQ team for taking 1st Place in the Kansas City National Chili Competition and 2nd Place in the ribeye competition.

Matthey Middle School Principal, Miguel Martell, said, “I’m thrilled to share the incredible accomplishments of our middle school BBQ teams at the recent Scheels National BBQ Competition in Kansas City, MO. Our students represented our district with outstanding skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship, and their results speak volumes about their dedication and talent.” Here is a list of the participants and future pitmasters:

Martell also stated that these outstanding results reflect months of hard work, practice, and a deep commitment to excellence from our students and staff.

A special thank you goes out to our incredible agriculture teachers, Mr. Steven Iredale and Mr. Matthew Stoddard, for their tireless mentorship and dedication throughout the season. I also want to recognize and thank Amanda Montelongo, Matthey Middle School Academic Dean, for her ongoing support—her involvement was instrumental in helping our teams succeed.

We would also like to thank our parents, whose support, encouragement, and countless hours behind the scenes made this success possible for our students. Their partnership and dedication played a vital role in preparing our students to shine on a national stage.
