In 2025, Southside ISD’s own Priscilla Ortegon was recognized with one of the highest honors in education — the Trinity Prize for Teaching Excellence, awarded by Trinity University’s Center for Educational Leadership. This prestigious award celebrates outstanding educators who exemplify excellence, leadership, and dedication in the classroom.
The award ceremony was a memorable occasion, attended by Ms. Ortegon’s family, colleagues, and members of the Southside High School staff. Highlights of the evening included a moving presentation by Trinity University leaders and the 2024 Texas State Teacher of the Year. San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg also offered heartfelt commendations, making the night even more meaningful.
As part of the recognition, Ms. Ortegon received a beautifully crafted hand-blown glass apple award from Garcia Art Glass, along with generous gifts provided by Whataburger, the event’s primary sponsor. These included:
-
A $1,000 cash prize
-
A $350 Amazon gift card for classroom supplies
-
A $350 gift card to support a student organization focused on diversity and inclusion
-
A year of free Whataburger
-
Commemorative Whataburger memorabilia
Presented by Whataburger CEO Debbie Stroud, the award was a touching tribute to the vital role of educators in shaping young minds.
