Driving to Safety: Freedom Students are Promoting Safer School Transportation

From stopping oncoming traffic when unloading to looking both ways before crossing, the National Association for Pupil Transportation promotes a variety of safety awareness for the safety of children’s transportation.

Since 2016, they’ve encouraged thousands of children from all across the country to participate in the National School Bus Safety Poster Contest, a contest that encourages and promotes school bus safety. The contest focuses on a special theme every year, this year being ‘Safety First – Safety Always’.

Students from Freedom Elementary were tasked in September 2024 to create a poster depicting this year’s theme. “I am always eager to have our students do their best!” says Art teacher, Jennifer Snider. Three of her students, Sofia Cavazos, Luis Rivas, and Emma Rodriguez-Picazo, were selected to move on to the State judging round, where they will be judged based on safety impact, originality, artistic quality, and visual Impact. We will find out this Summer if they will move on to Nationals.

A special thank you to Mr. Kevin Neafie for sharing this contest with our district and Ms. Jennifer Snider for encouraging her students to enter this contest!
