Lets Spell Together: Supporting your Child’s Writing Skills

Pearce Elem. - Child Pic 4

CAPS (Capitals, Appearance, Punctuation, & Spelling) is the latest fun and engaging writing strategy that helps your child learn how to form sentences confidently.

By using this new interactive strategy at home, you can make a big difference in reinforcing what your child is learning in the classroom and help your child develop strong writing skills. “CAPS encourages students to self-monitor during their writing,”  Reading specialist Ms. Salina Ramirez stated. She implemented CAPS as a means for students to take ownership of their writing. Over time, it helps them grow as independent readers and writers.

To start,

  1. Create a simple and short sentence together. Take inspiration from home to help increase your child’s vocabulary.
  2. Ask your child how many words are in the chosen sentence. Be sure to show your child the number of words in the sentence by drawing five boxes for every word in the sentence. Sentence boxes are a great way to help kids remember how many words are in a sentence they need to write.
  3. Go through the the CAPS strategy (Capitals, Appearance, Punctuation, & Spelling) checklist. This helps your child check their writing for common mistakes, making their sentences clear and correct.

The strategy also reminds students to read their sentences four times, checking one element each time.
