Southside High School is proud to announce that two of its graduating Seniors, Juan Palma and Caleb Smith, have been admitted to the highly ranked University of Chicago. With an acceptance rate of just 5%, this achievement speaks volumes about their hard work, dedication, and academic excellence. These two students are not only representing Southside High School but are also setting an example for their peers.

Juan Palma, a proud recipient of the QuestBridge National College Match Scholarship a full-ride scholarship, has been admitted to the University of Chicago, where he plans to major in Sociology, with the possibility of adding a double major in History. Throughout his time at Southside High School, Juan has demonstrated leadership and commitment in a variety of ways. He served as the drum major for the Mighty Cardinal Band, participated in UIL Debate and Academic Decathlon, and volunteered extensively at Mission Library and the San Fernando Cathedral.

Juan’s message to his fellow students is both inspiring and motivational: “Even if you feel like you haven’t done anything big yet—there’s still time to do something.”

Caleb Smith has also been admitted to the University of Chicago, with both the Odyssey and Phenoix Scholarship—a full-ride award. Caleb is awaiting responses from other top schools, including Vanderbilt University, the University of California-Berkeley, and Rice University.

During his time at Southside, Caleb has held several leadership roles, including serving as the Student Council Activity Director, President of the National Honor Society, and as an active member of the UIL Debate and Academic Decathlon teams. He also holds the distinction of achieving the highest SAT score ever recorded at Southside High School.

Caleb is grateful to his parents for their unwavering support and encouragement throughout his academic journey. He also thanks Ms. Rosemary Rodriguez, College and Career Readiness Facilitator at Southside HS, for her guidance in helping him discover numerous post-high school opportunities.

Southside High School is incredibly proud of both Juan Palma and Caleb Smith for their outstanding achievements. We look forward to seeing them continue to thrive in their college careers and beyond.
