Finding out that socks are one of the most needed clothing items in winter, the student council eagerly joined the Socktober drive.
Once the Mathey Middle School Student Council learned that socks were the most needed item in the winter they decided to start a Socktober Drive.
All 52 members, alongside the advisors; Ms. Lauri Marek and Ms. Davela Wilson, rallied together planning everything needed to run the drive. From designing and creating posters with all of the Socktober details to being responsible for the sock collection pick-up and daily announcements. They even designed a giant “Goal” sock, showcased in the cafeteria, so all the Matthey students could track the collection progress each day. Every pair of socks donated earned the student a paper sock next to the big goal sock with their name on it to recognize the donation and a $20 Cardinal Cash payment.
The Student Council Advisor, Ms. Marek says, “Our purpose is to provide service for the Southside community and Matthey Middle School.” In its very first year, their eagerness to help the community has let Matthey’s student body surpass the goal of 300 socks bringing in a total of 1,423.
But there was a ringer in the so-called sock pile, Malachi Cardoza, a sixth grader at Mathey had some connections to a non-profit that helped the numbers pile up. Thank you to Hope for the Hurting for donating 1,084 pairs of socks to the cause. All of the socks will be donated to Haven for Hope and the Matthey Student Closet.
