Being a parent to a child with special needs there is no shortage of resources available to support your child but it can be overwhelming figuring out what steps to take to ensure your child is prepared for the transition from school to adult life or ensuring how they can be successful while still in school.
The Special Programs Department is eager to start off the new year partnered with Texas A&M’s Institute for Autism and related disorders. Together they are hosting parent meetings every other month to bring resources to our special needs parents and help provide awareness to opportunities available to them.
An example of how they support their students is the opportunity to work. Gary Hiett, Special Programs Coordinator, and his contact at HEB have two of our students start work for the first time this week. The students are able to learn & build workforce skills needed and expose them to work in a new environment away from school and home. It’s a great opportunity to build confidence in their own skills and get that experience.
Special Programs department is dedicated to communicating with parents of a child who has special needs. For example, phone calls, take home flyers, emails, and google calendar invites are all steps the department takes to ensure they reach as many of their parents as possible.
Please join them on their next parent meeting December 11th at 5:30pm in the Heritage Elementary cafeteria and learn how to support your child’s social skills and communication.
Intended for parents who have a student with Autism but all are welcome!
