Families and employees in the Southside ISD are having fun participating in the It’s Time Texas Community Challenge. It’s a statewide competition for people at all health levels who are taking small steps to improve their health. Currently, Southside ISD is in 4th place just behind Lancaster ISD.
Locally, Gallardo Elementary School 1st grade teacher Brianna Gomez in holding onto the lead. She’s a diabetic and is already seeing results just by taking small steps. “I’m very competitive. I check the leader boards regularly and just keeping track of my blood sugars. Knowing that it’s working and it’s my A1C is going down and I’m doing better, helps me to want to keep going,” she said. Ms. Gomez says she’s drinking about a half-gallon of water daily, walking three miles a day and skipping junk and fried foods. “If you drink more than 64 ounces (of water) a day, that’s when your body begins to push out anything that isn’t good for your body and it also helps to control the sugars in your blood,” said Gomes.
