Sarita Loredo is an active parent at Southside ISD. She regularly asks her son about school and meets frequently with his teachers at Southside High School. She is doing her part to help him succeed. Mrs. Loredo was also happy to learn about major security upgrades made by the District’s professionals. “I feel my son is safe here. He’s now in the 11th grade and once he goes to school I feel at ease,” Loredo said.
The school district is investing heavily in security. The added security to protect students and staff includes:
- 11 Southside ISD police officers providing 24/7 supervision
- 14 security guards including staffing at each school
- Additional security cameras installed at Southside High School, Matthey Middle School, Freedom Elementary School, Gallardo Elementary School, and Heritage Elementary School
- 24/7 coverage with security officers
- panic alarms at all campuses and departments
- lockdown buttons at secondary campuses
- tardy sweeps at secondary campuses
- No backpacks on the last day of school before holidays
- Plans to transition to clear or mesh backpacks in the 2022-2023 school year
Mrs. Loredo says the community is grateful for the added security upgrades. She said, “Our students and staff can work in peace. “It allows teachers to focus on helping our children succeed.”
