Southside ISD teacher offering $1,000 award to students who pass STAAR exam

Southside ISD Teacher of the Year Mr. Israel del Valle is offering his students $1,000 if they pass the STAAR exam on May 11.

Southside Independent School District Teacher of the Year for 2021 Mr. Israel del Valle is going big. The Matthey Middle School 8th grade math teacher is offering his students $1,000 if they score a perfect 100 percent on the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) math test on May 11. Last month Southside ISD awarded Mr. del Valle $3,000 for being named the District Teacher of the Year. “It’s not really my money,” said del Valle. “It’s really their money and I’m just here because of them,” he said as he pointed to his students. Mr. del Valle has approximately 120 students in his math classes. If needed, he said he’s prepared to take out a loan to fulfill his promise to his students. Superintendent Mr. Rolando Ramirez said Mr. del Valle’s passion says it all. “He goes above and beyond and to use that money to provide an incentive for our kids tell you why he’s our Teacher of the Year. He does an amazing job,” said the Superintendent.
