On Friday, May 31, The Southside ISD Education Foundation gave out fifteen $1000 scholarships to Southside High students at the SHS 8th Annual Senior Decision Day. The SHS Athletic Booster Club and Southside Alumni Association also awarded scholarships. The ceremony recognizes graduating seniors and their post-secondary decisions announcing where each student will attend college. We also recognize students’ enlistment to the military service. Representatives from more than a dozen universities and colleges and representatives from each of the armed forces were in attendance. The high energy pep rally-style event takes a page from the athletic “signing day” festivities.
Each of the students was surprised with a novelty “big check” and presented the scholarship in front of hundreds of family and friends at the SHS competition gym.
The event has grown from just a few dozen students declaring their colleges of choice to more than 150 participating students over the years.
Currently, SHS students have earned more than three million in total scholarship monies.
