Heroes for Health! selects Southside ISD as 2019 command center

The vast majority of students in San Antonio worked out today as part of Heroes for Health! It’s an initiative  to encourage children to eat healthy and maintain an active lifestyle. It’s an important message since the rate of diabetes and diabetic amputations is three times greater on the South Side than anywhere else in San Antonio, according a study by University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine clinical researcher Dr. Anil Mangla. Southside’s ISD Gallardo Elementary served as this year command center. VIPs included school district board members from Southside ISD, Northside ISD, and North East ISD. Additionally, San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood spoke to the students about fire safety while Amergroup’s Ruben Ramos the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. San Antonio Fire Fighters led the 250 fourth and fifth graders in physical activity that included running in place, marching in place, and squats.
