Southside ISD showcases World Language Conference

Freedom Elementary campus was selected as a model dual language learning campus as part of the World Language Conference held in San Antonio on November 1-2, 2018. Southside High School Mariachis performed for the conference on opening day at the Educational Services Center-Region 20. Teachers from three school districts came to Freedom Elementary to learn what they can do to help their students in the Poteet, Uvalde, and Medina Valley school districts. In 2014, Southside ISD became an all-dual language district.

Ingrid Palacios a fourth grade teacher at Freedom Elementary uses magnetic diagrams to help her lual language students understand the concept of critical thinking. Using the magnetic diagrams is a highly advanced method of instruction that’s providing the Southside ISD’s dual language students with quality learning and good grades. Data shows Southside ISD students enrolled in the districts dual language programs make better grades than students in general education. For example, Freedom Elementary’s dual language students have the best writing scores in the district. It’s significant because writing is the highest form of communication. Additionally, Freedom’s dual language students also received the highest scores in math, closing performance gaps, and student progress.
