For the first time in Southside ISD history, all 6,000 students will be able to eat free breakfast and free lunch. It’s happening after the Texas Department of Agriculture verified that the vast majority of students in our district already qualified for free and reduced lunch. Child Nutrition Director Janie Ramirez says the district qualified to operate the Community Eligibility Provision under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program.
One mother said she would be saving up to $150 every two weeks now that her children will be receiving free meals.
Also, new items on the school menu include:
- whole grain donut holes
- boneless wings
- bone-in wings
- spicy chicken chunks (middle school and high school)
- sherbert fruit juice every other Friday
- ice popscicles, ice cream cones, ice cream sandwiches
Additionally, all Southside ISD students will part of the Be A Champion after school meal program. It provides meals to students before they go home.
