Grandparents advocacy group holding city-wide celebration
(San Antonio) — The city’s only and fastest growing advocacy group for grandparents raising grandchildren is holding its first city-wide celebration, Saturday, July 21, 10 a.m.-2:00 p.m., San Pedro Springs Park, 2200 N. Flores Street.
The group, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, is one of the fastest growing advocacy organizations representing seniors and elderly who suddenly find themselves parenting small children and teens.
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren serves as a support group to help caregivers find resources for seniors who suddenly find themselves in their golden years caring for children. In one case, an 89-year old San Antonio great-grandmother was left caring for her six grandchildren.
Grandparents are one of the fastest growing populations raising children in San Antonio and around the nation. By some estimates, as many as 20 percent of children in San Antonio are being raised by their grandparents.
“In the Southside ISD, already, we know of at least seven grandparents who are caring for their four-year old grandchildren enrolled in our new Menchaca Early Childhood Center,” said Superintendent Mark E. Eads.
The rapid growth in the group’s numbers is happening primarily, because birth parents are gripped either by addiction or have been sent to prison said Delia Martinez, the group’s co-founder.
On Saturday, July 21, State Senator Jose Menendez, State Representative Ina Marie Minjarez, and the office of San Antonio Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales will join grandparents to show their support.
