Surprise Scholarships at Decision Day 2018

The NFL’s Priest Holmes and  two Foundations, Southside ISD Education Foundation and the SHS Alumni Foundation, all showed up to surprise several students with scholarships in a gym full of students declaring which college or military service they would be attending on June 1, 2018.

Hundreds filled the SHS gym Friday morning at the SHS 7th Annual Senior Decision Day. The ceremony recognizes graduating seniors and their post –secondary decisions announcing where each student will attend college.  Students’ enlistment to the military service were also recognized. Representatives from more than a dozen universities and colleges were on  hand to help welcome the students with “swag bags” and representatives from each of the armed forces also attended. The high energy pep rally style event takes a page from the athletic “signing day” festivities.  The event has grown from just a few dozen students declaring their colleges of choice to more than 130 participating over the years. And, these are just the students who are participating. Many more SHS seniors are attending college, but have not declared yet. The crowd enjoyed student performances and the shocked and surprised faces of at least ten students who were awarded scholarships.

The Southside ISD Education foundation awarded ten $1000 scholarships to ten students.  Go to this link  for a list of all the students who were awarded scholarships.

The Priest Holmes Foundation Scholarship Recipients:

Natalie Herrera-Diaz, Pedro Fuentes, and a third student received a scholarship, Allie Herrera, but she was not in attendance.

The SHS Alumni Association also awarded six $500 scholarships to: Gamy Moyo, Loretta Nieto, Gabriella Aguilar, Allie Herrera, John Herrera, and Cristel Torres .
