San Antonio – Volunteers will gather Saturday to start the first phase of Southside HS’s community garden. The funding for this community project came from a multi organization effort

Earlier this school year the Southside ISD Future Farmers of America (FFA) students went to AT&T Center to accept a $4k+ grant from the Spurs Sports & Entertainment nonprofit partner Silver & Black Give Back. The award came after they submitted a project by Southside High School senior Adam Garcia.

Garcia also serves at the districts Mayor’s Fitness Council Ambassador.

In addition to impressing the Silver & Black Give Back organizers, His service project was recommended for grant seed funding by a grant review committee and got the attention of Mayor Ivy Taylor.  The Mayor’s Fitness Council, Mayor Ivy Taylor, The Baptist Health Foundation, H-E-B and It’s Time Texas announced earlier this year that Adam’s team is the recipient of $6,000.00 to go towards the community garden project. Adam’s project features a community garden that will eventually provide a fresh food market for the Southside community. There currently is no grocery store providing fresh produce in SISD.

The team will attend a funding meeting on Tuesday, February 7th from 5:30 – 7:00 pm at the Municipal Plaza Building in the Plaza B Room – 114 W. Commerce Street SA, TX 78205.  This is where the mayor will be presenting the $6,000!

In the meantime, Garcia, the FFA students and dozens of high school volunteers are wasting no time planting that “seed” money.  This Saturday they will begin to work on the plant beds and plant seeds.

Saturday from 1pm – 2pm a special appearance from T-Bone the Rampage Mascot and representatives from SWBC, and Silver and Black giveback will be on site to broadcast the volunteers efforts live on Facebook.

Media in welcome to capture this momentous occasion, interviews with students and the FFA direct Mr. Steve Iredale will be available.
