Southside ISD to Activate Bus Safety Cameras

Southside ISD’s transportation department joined several other Bexar County school districts to support school bus safety.

This week in an effort to protect children who ride school buses, it was announced at a press conference that outside cameras have been installed to catch drivers who ignore school bus safety warning lights.

Southside ISD is one of five school districts in San Antonio that will activate its security cameras next week.  Northeast ISD, Judson ISD, South San ISD, and Southwest ISD are joining Southside ISD in installing the high-tech side-mounted cameras on school buses. 700 school buses in the city of San Antonio are already equipped with the cameras and ticketing again  Monday Dec 5.

The high-tech cameras will capture the license plate numbers of drivers who ignore the school bus warning lights. A computer will automatically send the license plate to law enforcement who will then issue a citation. Passing a school bus with its flashing warning lights carries a severe penalty. Violations occur on average more than once per day per school bus in the city.  Fines begin at a minimum $300.00 and 40% of that revenue from ticketing goes directly to the school districts.  This service costs school districts NO MONEY AT ALL.
