Southside ISD Annual Special Olympics Awards Ceremony

[soliloquy id=”397″] In spite of some rain and thunder, Southside ISD Special Olympics Award Ceremony went on to shine on May 31, 2016. More than 82 athletes were invited including the family of Abraham Montano, age 14, who passed away in May.  His Matthey MS principal Staci Weaver and his teacher Mr. Lipsey gave a special tribute to the family of the 14 year old. Mr. Gary Hiett, Transition Coordinator, and the special programs department presented the Montano family with a framed photo collage of Abraham’s accomplishments. Afterwards the still visually emotional family hugged and thanked administrators and teachers.

The Special Olympics Awards Ceremony is a chance to recognize athletes with disabilities and their accomplishments throughout the year.  The event was set to happen at the stadium but was rained out.  The intrepid team that is “Special Programs” managed to move the event in doors from the stadium to the high school commons area (cafeteria).

Each of the students who were able to attend received a shiny gold trophy, a hearty handshake and got their picture taken for the website. Thank you to all who made our Special Olympics Awards Ceremony a Success!
