Students with Southside HS Future Farmers of America sacrificed sleep and a few degrees to sell 500 tacos to fellow Cardinals and the community for a great cause. It took a team effort. By five in the morning Friday the ovens and stoves were steaming, with bacon and eggs, beans and tortillas, inside Chef Brown’s Culinary Arts kitchen. News crews from KENS 5, Fox News First and WOAI News 4 were grateful for the warm start, but reporter Marvin Hurst and Fox’s Cleto Rodriguez along with their photographers were shivering with the rest of us when the tacos were ready to serve outside at the high school courtyard at seven in the morning.
FFA sponsor Steve Iredale says the group sold out before the 40 degree temperatures and rain could do any real damage to these seasoned agriculture and rodeo enthusiasts. Folks were able to get a taco for a dollar or two canned goods. One hundred percent of the proceeds are going to El Carmen Catholic Church and the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.
