Freedom Elementary Turns Pennies into Hope

“Pennies for Patients” is celebrating its 10th year here at Freedom Elementary.  It benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  It officially kicked off in September but runs through Oct.14th.

Freedom was chosen as one of the schools to pilot the new incentives from the LLS.  All of the students get several items to take home: a parent letter, instructions for online donations, and their own personal collection box.  Each classroom gets a poster to keep a tally of monies donated, and a collection box to place their donations that they turn in daily/weekly.  The Campaign starts on the 26th of September and ends on the 14th of October. The class that donates the most money, gets lunch from the Olive Garden.  If Freedom Elementary raises $3000.00, the class that has raised the most money gets to go on a Field trip to the Olive Garden and eat there!

Also, two Southside employees will be our Honored Heroes.  Mrs. Catarina Hurtado, our Technology Aide, and Ms. Sheri Roberts, our Art Teacher are cancer survivors. They inspire us every day.

To date, Freedom Elementary has raised more than $11,000.00 dollars for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  The fundraiser has been led by Coach Maria Mendez for more than a decade. Coach Mendez says she couldn’t do this work without the support of Principal, Thomasina Montana, Phys. Ed. Aid, Coach Marie Vaquera and staff.
